How to Measure Yourself for a Bra (and Finally Get the Right Fit)

Why Bra Fit Matters More Than You Think
Studies suggest that up to 80% of women are wearing the wrong bra size. The right fit isn't just about comfort — it's about posture, confidence, and how every outfit looks and feels. Here's how to get it right at home.
What You'll Need
- A soft measuring tape
- A mirror
- A non-padded bra (or no bra at all)
Step 1: Measure Your Band Size
Wrap the measuring tape snugly around your ribcage, directly under your bust. Keep it parallel to the floor. Round to the nearest whole number. If the number is even, that's your band size. If it's odd, round up to the next even number.
Example: 31" → band size 32
Step 2: Measure Your Bust
Wrap the tape loosely around the fullest part of your bust (usually across the nipple line). Don't pull it tight — you want a comfortable, natural measurement.
Step 3: Calculate Your Cup Size
Subtract your band size from your bust measurement. The difference determines your cup size:
- Less than 1" = AA
- 1" = A
- 2" = B
- 3" = C
- 4" = D
- 5" = DD/E
Example: Bust 36" − Band 32" = 4" difference → Cup size D → Bra size 32D
Step 4: Check the Fit
Once you have your size, try it on and check these signs of a good fit:
- The band sits straight across your back (not riding up)
- The center gore lies flat against your sternum
- Cups fully contain your breast tissue with no spillage or gaps
- Straps don't dig in or slide off
Sister Sizes: When You're Between Sizes
Bra sizing isn't one-size-fits-all. If one size doesn't feel quite right, try a sister size — the same cup volume in an adjacent band size. Going up a band size, go down a cup (e.g., 34C → 36B). Going down a band, go up a cup (e.g., 34C → 32D).
